Self Pleasuring for Women – Facts & Benefits

YES, IT’S TRUE – female masturbates, too. Masturbation can be a pretty charged and confusing subject for women: there just isn't that much accurate information out there about it. As our society becomes more open, and women more confident about themselves and more in touch with their sexuality, more of us are admitting to masturbating.

Some of my closer friends still blush (we are still the conservative Asian good girls you know?) when we talked about such topics sometimes. After rounds of giggling and a lot of nudging, what we are left with would be deeper understanding and awareness of our own bodies and knowledge of a range of techniques. The greatest part of it all – we hardly feel guilty or ashamed about it.

Masturbation is a healthy way for females to satisfy their sexual feelings and learn about their own sexual response. It is particularly important for a woman to understand her own body and sexual response, because it is not something that can easily be learned from a lover (he or she is probably depending on YOU to teach them how to please YOU!) For this reason, it is not surprising that many women have been sexually active for years but have NEVER EXPERIENCED AN ORGASM. This is a tragedy -- and it definitely reinforces the importance of a woman being in touch with her own body and sexual response.

Facts
According to surveys conducted by renowned sexologists over the last 30 to 40 years, these are some of the findings that were applicable to the western society. They are interesting, and some surprising. Summarized they tell us that we are not alone:

1. From early surveys a figure of around 60% of females of 'sexually active ages' were reported to masturbate at some time or other.

2. More recent reports put the figure at over 80%. This may be due to changes in attitudes about admitting to doing it or it may really show that it is becoming more common.

3. Babies and very young children of both sexes deliberately masturbate themselves though more girls than boys actually have orgasms through this. Infant masturbation is thought to be a positive behavior and appears to be related to a sense of well-being and desirable personality development. A girl friend of mine once told me she was caught playing with herself using a pacifier at the tender age of 4! She was terribly spanked by her mum (that’s why she remembered that incident). Luckily that didn’t stop her from enjoying a healthy sex life later…

4. Women in their eighties have admitted to being active masturbators. Modern hormone replacement therapy extends a woman's active sex life/desire and so more older women are masturbating now than in the past.

5. The commonest time for a girl to discover masturbation is during her early teens though a significant number discover it later in life. As few give up after discovering it, more older women masturbate than do younger ones.

6. The techniques used by women are much more varied than the ones employed by males and among other things include the use of the hand or fingers, vibrators, all sorts of elongated objects, penis substitutes, running water, and fruits and vegetables.

7. Among those that masturbate the frequency range is great. Some are several times each day participators while others only masturbate on rare occasions. There is no obvious link to show why some are one way and others the other.

8. Females both in and out of steady sexual relationships masturbate. It is not an indication of a failure in a relationship if a woman feels the need to continue masturbating. It just shows that she enjoys masturbating.

9. While fewer people these days experience guilt, shame, fear, and embarrassment about masturbation than in the past, nevertheless, a surprising number still do, including college students. Acceptance of masturbation is greater among the tertiary-educated and those of upper social levels than among non-tertiary-educated and those of lower social levels.

10. Some medical students, residents, and doctors still believe that masturbation causes emotional disorders.

11. Personality characteristics such as feelings of self-esteem (especially) and security seem to be related to an acceptance of masturbation.

12. The element of religion, as always, continues to have a negative influence on masturbation, and is more prevalent among nonreligious people than among those who are devout.

The Benefits

1. Its pleasurable – what can be a more compelling reason?

2. It helps you relax - safer than tranquillizers, cheaper than alcohol and no side effects

3. It helps you get to sleep if you are suffering from insomnia

4. It can make you feel 'energized' and focused, making study or concentration related tasks easier

5. It gives a degree of relief from the physical discomforts many feel during periods

6. It allows you to find out what you like so that you can share your needs with a partner and have better sex

7. It is always available when sexual tensions need releasing - not always true of partner sex

8. It allows you to have as much gratification as you want, when you want it and at your speed - partner sex cannot compete

9. It takes the pressure off your partner as he/she is not the only source of your orgasms

10. It is the one form of sex with no risk of disease, pregnancy or emotional upset

11. It fits in with your life - unlike partner sex

12. It often results in more powerful and longer orgasms than other forms of sex.

13. It allows you to fantasize and act as you want - please yourself not your partner

14. No partner/audience (usually) means you can be less inhibited in your use of toys and any other item you may personally find erotic

15. You can do it at your pace and can spread it out as long as you want. Longer periods of pre-orgasmic arousal can often result in better and more satisfying orgasms.

16. It saves time when you need an orgasm - no need to find a partner - and less risk of getting involved with a jerk just because you are desperate.

17. It's free!

18. Masturbation to the point of orgasm appears to put less strain on the heart as measured by an increase in heart rate than does partner activity that results in orgasm. Many of us would sure love to see such studies on Asians, instead of having only the Durex Global Sex Survey concluding that Asians are ranked lowly in the frequency of their carnal activities!
